2002 Season

Repertoire – Climbing Everest

Utilizing the music from the IMAX film Everest, film Vertical Limit, and the music of David Gillinghams “New Century Dawn”, Capital Regiment captures the drama of a journey filled with the incredible struggles and eventual triumph of reaching the top of the world known as Mt. Everest.  The show opens with all the ethnic mysteries and intrigue that personifies Tibet and quickly moves to a very dynamic and powerful opening statement captured from Everest’sThe Himalayas”.  The journey moves into the fast paced and energetic music of “New Century Dawn”, showcasing all of the optimism and ambivalence of  The Ascent”.

The second movement Base Camp: “The Spirit Returns” offers an opportunity for the brass ensemble and guard to illustrate through lush harmonies and expressive qualities the haunting beauty and power of the awe inspiring mountain.  The “Avalanche” production from Vertical Limit is filled with complex rhythms and mixed-meter intensity as the brass and percussion ensembles each demonstrate through conversation, the power and tension of impending doom.  In the final production, To the Summit, Capital Regiment uses the music of “New Century Dawn” to portray the heroic qualities of the journeymen who are compelled to throw caution to the wind, to ignore the concerns of loved ones, and willingly subject themselves to such great risk.  Their hardships, struggles and life threatening expense are vindicated when they lay claim that they are one of the few who have conquered Everest.
